IN THE MILITARY
All military enlistments are for a period of eight
years. When a person enlists in the active duty military for a period
of time, say four years, he or she is actually enlisting for eight
years of military service, the first four being on active duty. If said
enlistee re-enlists for another four years, the contract is actually an
eight-year contract, again the first four years being on active duty.
If said enlistee does not re-up at the end of his or her four year enlistment,
he or she has some options: Active Reserve or National Guard duty which
require training for one weekend a month plus two weeks a year, and being
available for activation to Active Duty Service; or Individual Ready Reserve
(IRR) status, which requires the same availability for activation, but
without the ongoing training or training pay. It works similarly for officers
and retirees, but I don't know the details.
It is very rare for the IRR to be called up, mainly
because they generally make poor soldiers. These are people who decided
after fulfilling their active duty commitment that the military was not
for them, and they went back to civilian life, often wanting nothing more
to do with the military ever. As a result, when the IRR do get called
up, it is usually only for under-strength but crucial non-combat roles,
such as doctors, lawyers, language experts, and other highly-specialized
fields.
