May 1st Report to National

Maine Chapter 001 has been very active over the past few months, and we anticipate becoming involved in and planning other actions throughout the spring and summer months.  On March 20th, VFP led 1,500 demonstrators through the streets of Augusta.  Our contingent, numbering about 50 members, pulled a trailer with 600 crosses on it.  Four VFP members kicked off the rally with speeches, one of which (Peggy Akers’ speech) was picked up by CommonDreams.  On April 17th, Board member Jack Bussell led a rally and demonstration against the launching of an Aegis destroyer at Bath Iron Works.  On April 23 and 24, VFP member Bruce Gagnon hosted the international Global Network Conference Against the Militarization of Space.  VFP will also be involved in a Mother’s Day march and rally on May 9th; we will be staffing a VFP information table at the Maine Democratic Convention May 21 through May 23; and we are planning to have our trailer of crosses at the Brunswick Memorial Day Parade.  Finally, VFP is co-sponsoring a G.I. Coffeehouse in Farmington, Maine that is open every second and fourth Friday for Iraq War and Afghanistan War veterans and their families.  A picture of the trailer with crosses is attached.
